Event Information

Miscommunication! Swordplay! People in disguise! Witty banter! John Strand's adaptation of a 17th century comedy by Antoine Jacob, Monfleury, combines elements of classic comedy with serious undertones in an intriguing tale of romance, betrayal, and revenge among the French aristocracy in 1660s Paris. When Bernard suspects that his wife Julie has betrayed him, he strands her on a remote desert island where, he presumes, she will die. Three years later, he has become infatuated with the flirtatious young Constance and wants to marry her, though he faces competition from the overbearing Spanish captain Don Lope and from a mysterious new suitor: Frederic—who is actually Julie, very much alive and disguised as a man. This feisty survivor sets out to discover why Bernard wanted her dead and to launch a revenge plot, despite the fact she still loves her husband. PG-13

Directed by Meg Zauner
